Grandmother's Table Runner Tutorial

I recently added fabric to my Etsy Shop and one of the first lines I received was Granny Chic by Lori Holt of Bee In My Bonnet for Riley Blake Designs. The moment I saw this line I knew I had to have it! I loved the vintage look and the beautiful colors. I was especially drawn to the "Dishes" print in pink. It instantly made me think of my Grandmother Faye. My grandmother had the most beautiful collection of antique tea cups and saucers. I always wanted to play with them when I was a little girl visiting her at her house. When my grandmother passed, I was given a few tea cups to treasure forever and remember my grandmother by.

When I received this fabric line, I knew I wanted to make something to showcase the prints. I am just getting my feet wet in this pattern writing world so I knew I had to start small. I was too nervous to start with a large quilt so I started with a table runner. This table runner can be used all year round to add a pop of color into your home. Put it on your kitchen table, coffee table, or even on top of a dresser! I am really excited to share this project with you and I hope you love it as much as I do!

GRANDMOTHER'S TABLE RUNNER

Table runner finishes at approximately 47" x 20"

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• 3 fat eighths for squares (green, pink, and blue prints)
• ¼ yard for rectangles (floral print)
• ¼ yard for flying geese (yellow print)
• ¼ yard for background (white solid)
• ¼ yard for sashing (white solid)
• ⅓ yard for borders (floral print)
• ⅓ yard for binding (yellow print)
• 1 ½ yard for backing (various Granny Chic prints)
• Cotton quilt batting, such as Warm and White or Warm and Natural

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS:

• Read all instructions before you begin. 
• All seams are ¼" allowance. 
• RST = Rights Sides Together.
• WOF = Width Of Fabric. 
• Most fabric is 43"/44" wide. 

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Quilt Blocks:

1. From one fat eighth, cut (3) 4 ½" squares for center of quilt blocks (green print).

2. From one fat eighth, cut (12) 2 ½" squares (pink print).

3. From one fat eighth, cut (12) 2 ½" squares (blue print).

4. From ¼ yard print, cut (12) 2 ½" x 4 ½" rectangles (floral print).

5. From ¼ yard print, cut (12) 2 ½" x 4 ½" rectangles for flying geese (yellow print).

6. From background fabric, cut (24) 2 ½" squares (white solid).

7. From background fabric, cut (24) 2 ½" squares for flying geese (white solid).

Sashing:

1. From sashing fabric, cut (4) 2" x WOF strips (white solid).
2. Sub-cut into (4) 2" x 12 ½" strips and (2) 2" x 42 ½" strips.

Borders:
1. From one leftover fat eighth, cut (4) 3" squares for corners (green print).
2. From border fabric, cut (3) 3" x WOF strips (floral print).
3. Sub-cut into (2) 3" x 15 ½" strips and (2) 3" x 42 ½" strips.

Binding:
From binding fabric, cut (4) 2 ½" x WOF strips.

*Cutting of the batting and backing will take place once the table runner top is complete*

PIECING INSTRUCTIONS:

Nine Patch Block
1. Sew (2) 2 ½" x 4 ½" rectangles to the left and right side of (1) 4 ½" square.



2. Press seams toward the rectangles/outside. Unit should measure 4 ½" x 8 ½". Make 1 unit.

3. Sew (2) 2 ½" squares to the left and right side of (1) 2 ½" x 4 ½" rectangle.

4. Press seams toward the center. Unit should measure 2 ½" x 8 ½". Make 2 units.

5. Match seams and pin. Assemble nine patch block.

6. Press seams toward the center. Block should measure 8 ½" x 8 ½". Make 1 block.

Flying Geese
1. Draw a diagonal line (from one corner to the opposite corner) on the wrong side of (8) 2 ½"  background squares.

2. Place (1) 2 ½" background square on one end/left side of (1)             
    2 ½" x 4 ½" rectangle, RST.
3. Sew on drawn line.
4. Trim ¼" away from seam.
5. Fold open and press seam toward the background fabric.

6. Place (1) 2 ½" background square on the other end/right            
    side of 2 ½" x 4 ½" rectangle, RST.
7. Sew on drawn line.
8. Trim ¼" away from seam.
9. Fold open and press seam toward the background fabric.














10. Flying geese unit should measure 2 ½" x 4 ½". Make 4 units.

Outer Block Units
1. Sew (2) 2 ½" background squares to the left and right side of (1) 2 ½" x 4 ½" flying geese unit.

2. Press seams toward the squares/outside.
3. Outer block unit should measure 2 ½" x 8 ½". Make 4 units.

4. Take 2 of the outer block units and sew (2) 2 ½" squares to the left and right sides.

5. Press seams toward the squares/outside.
6. Unit should measure 2 ½" x 12 ½". Make 2 units.

Quilt Block
1. Match seams, pin, and sew 2 outer block units to the left and right side of the nine patch block.

2. Press seams toward the center.

3. Match seams, pin, and sew the other 2 outer block units to the top and bottom of the nine patch block.

4. Press seams toward the outer block units/outside.

5. Press quilt block. Block should measure 12 ½" x 12 ½". Make 3 quilt blocks.

TABLE RUNNER ASSEMBLY:

Sashing
1. Sew 3 quilt blocks and (4) 2" x 12 ½" sashing strips into a row. Place sashing strips between the blocks and on each end.
2. Press seams toward the quilt blocks.

3. Sew (2) 2" x 42 ½" sashing strips to the top and bottom.
4. Press seams toward the sashing/outside.

Borders
1. Sew (2) 3" x 15 ½" border strips to left and right side of runner.
2. Press seams toward the borders/outside.

3. Sew (4) 3" squares to each end of (2) 3" x 42 ½" border strips.
4. Press seams toward the border strip. Each border should measure 3" x 47 ½".

4. Match seams, pin, and sew (2) 3" x 47 ½" border strips to the top and bottom of runner.
5. Press seams toward the borders/outside.
6. Runner should measure 47 ½" x 20 ½".

FINISHING THE TABLE RUNNER:

1. Cut and piece backing as desired. Backing should measure 47 ½"  x 20 ½" with an additional 2" - 3" all around. I sewed (5) 10 ½" x 22" pieces of fabric together to create my backing. 
2. Cut a piece of batting the same size as your backing (with the additional 2" - 3" all around).
3. Press the backing and table runner top.
4. Layer the table runner top, batting, and backing together. 
5. Baste and quilt table runner as desired.
6. Sew on binding and attach by hand or machine.
